Memphis, TENN. (June 12, 2024) – Memphis 901 FC put together a two-goal rally in stoppage time to grab a point against Rhode Island FC on Wednesday night at AutoZone Park.
Memphis was down 2-0 in at the end of regulation but capitalized on two hard fouls from Rhode Island defenders to grab two set piece goals from Samuel Careaga and Marlon.
A red card obstruction of a scoring opportunity from the Rhode Island goalkeeper made way from a Careaga free kick try from 22 yards out. Careaga bent the shot around a wall of defenders to beat the keeper and score his second free kick goal in as many attempts this season.
Five minutes later, Lucas Turci was pulled down in the box and awarded a shot from the penalty spot. Marlon stepped in a delivered a strike to score his team-leading sixth goal of the season and complete the rally to grab a point.
The Beale Street Boys are unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches.

POSTGAME QUOTE SHEET
Memphis 901 FC vs. Rhode Island FC | June 12, 2024 – AutoZone Park
HEAD COACH STEPHEN GLASS
On tonight’s performance:
“We saved the good stuff for the end, but we had plenty of the bad stuff for the first 90 minutes. I think we were poor tonight. There’s no two ways about it. Everything that was bad in the game came from ourselves. They’re a tough team to play against and they’re scratching for wins. They’ve got a good group of players and we knew they were going to come in and be difficult. We went under and didn’t perform as we should have, but when you’ve got spirit in the group, they come through at some point and we were fortunate enough to get the point.”
On the resilience to come back:
“I think it says they’re never down and out. They’ve got a spirit that’s unbelievable. We’ve got good players but you can try and nurture it and foster it, but if it’s not in the players it’s not going to show. I think our group of players have got unbelievable heart. They don’t know when they’re beaten and I think that’s a huge, huge positive. We know we need to recover and go because New Mexico is coming Saturday and we know it’ll be another tough game.”
On managing health:
I think that’s why we train the way we train. We might need to shake it up on Saturday because some of them might look a bit dead, but you’ll see a hungry group again no matter what 11 goes on the pitch. We had to take (Nighte Pickering) off because the goalie hit him that hard, he’s banged his head. We had to protect him. Nighte hopefully will be okay for Saturday. He’s got a pretty sore leg and head. He’s one that we’re hoping is good for Saturday because he came on and gave us a big impact in the game.
On New Mexico on Saturday:
“They’re one of the best teams in the league, East and West. We felt it when we were there last year. They’ll be confident and fresh. We’ll be ready. It’ll be a great challenge and I think it’ll be a good game. Hopefully we get the backing of the fans like we did tonight and we’ll excite them like we did tonight.”
