22-Year-Old Set for Second USL Club

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director Tim Howard and Head Coach Tim Mulqueen have announced the signing of midfielder Jean-Christophe Koffi. The 22-year-old becomes the latest addition to the 2020 Memphis squad, pending league and federation approval.

Born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Koffi spent his collegiate years at the University of Virginia, where he helped the Cavaliers to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Koffi played in 16 matches as a Freshman in 2015, and then started a combined 40 games over his final two seasons before he turned his attention to the professional ranks. In his final season with Virginia, Koffi netted three goals, as he earned First Team All-ACC honors.

“We’re delighted to welcome Jean-Christophe to our organization,” Mulqueen said. “He has the ability to be the best ball-winning midfielder in the USL.”

Koffi joins 901 FC after a season with the New York Red Bulls. With Red Bulls II, Koffi appeared in 27 games throughout the 2019 season, with 26 starts. The midfielder’s time with the Red Bulls and Cavaliers followed four years in the D.C. United Academy. His progress at a young age earned him a 2014 invite to that year’s Generation Adidas Elite Soccer Program, which coincided with that season’s MLS All-Star Game.

“Along with Jean-Christophe’s endless athletic ability, he’s also a great competitor,” Mulqueen said. “His ability to cover ground is tremendous, and his experience at this level will provide an immediate impact.”

The club’s roster now consists of 17 players, with 10 returning from the 901 FC’s inaugural 2019 season. In addition to the signing of Koffi, the 901 FC roster includes Captain Marc Burch, Brandon Allen, Pierre Da Silva, Liam Doyle, Raul Gonzalez, Triston Hodge, Dan Metzger, Duane Muckette, Leston Paul, Jim Barkei, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Zach Carroll, Mark Segbers, Rafael Mentzingen, Michael Reed and Jimmy Hague.

Memphis 901 FC hopes to build on a successful inaugural season where they averaged over 6,500 fans per game—the ninth highest attendance in the league, second among expansion teams.
