Stoppage Time Penalty Kick Allows Legion to Tie Score

Memphis 901 FC picked up a point Saturday night with a 2-2 tie against Group G-leading Birmingham Legion FC at BBVA Compass in Birmingham.

901 FC head coach Tim Mulqueen shook up the lineup with Cal Jennings and University of Memphis alum Raul Gonzalez making their first starts of the season to give Memphis a new look.

Throughout the entire match Birmingham dominated the possession statistic, maintaining over seventy percent of the possession, but Memphis was able to take advantage of their chances.

After Birmingham struck first, Memphis regained composure and tied the match off the foot of Rafa Mentzingen in the 18th minute. Less than ten minutes later Cal Jennings earned Memphis a penalty kick after breaking loose through the Birmingham defensive line. Keanu Marsh-Brown converted on the penalty kick giving Memphis the lead in the 28th minute.

Memphis maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the first half by battling off countless Birmingham attacks.

Early in the second half 901 FC brought in both Duane Muckette and Brandon Allen to maintain the offensive pressure. Dan Metzger entered the match in the 80th minute, marking his first appearance of the season for Memphis.

Memphis maintained a strong defensive line throughout the entire second half as they battled to maintain the lead and take home three points, but nine minutes of stoppage proved to be too much.

Throughout the stoppage time Memphis battled to keep the attacking Legion out of the net, but in the 96th minute Memphis conceded a penalty.  Birmingham converted to even the score and escape with a tie.

Memphis continues their road trip next Saturday as they travel to Raleigh for another Group G match against North Carolina FC at 6PM Central. Catch the action on CW30 Memphis or ESPN+.
