Memphis, Tenn. – In honor of 901 Day, and Memphis 901 FC’s birthday, the club has announced $9.01 tickets. All fans 21 years of age and older will receive a voucher for a complimentary 12-ounce beer from Memphis’ Ghost River Brewing Co. at the team’s match on Wednesday, Sept. 1.

“901 Day has a special place in our hearts. We announced 901 FC and we had the first soccer match ever at AutoZone Park on Sept. 1 back in 2018,” President Craig Unger said. “We’re excited to celebrate our third birthday with everyone in the 901!”

As a part of the 901 Day celebration, in a first for the Club, fans can enter for the chance to follow in the footsteps of Ja Morant, Penny Hardaway, Ryan Silverfield and others in smashing the guitar during the pre-match ceremony. During his five-match stint with Memphis, the veteran goalkeeper recorded 24 saves on 30 shots faced to earn an 80% save success rate in five starts. Morton guided 901 FC to a 2-1-2 record that included two clean sheets during his month in Memphis. On top of his stellar play on the pitch, Morton earned USL Championship Player of the Week honors in Week 12.

While his time in Memphis was short-lived, Morton made his mark on the young club, as the Pennsylvania native is currently fourth in club history with his 24 saves and is tied for the second-most saves in a match with eight (at Birmingham Legion FC, July 10).

Memphis, Tenn. – Kyle Murphy has been named the USL Championship Player of the Month for July following four goals in four matches that featured two match-winners. The honor marks the first such recognition for Memphis 901 FC, as the forward led Memphis to is first unbeaten month since May 2019.  

Murphy received 41% of a weighted poll that included the USL Championship Technical Committee, a national panel of independent media representing every USL market and an online fan vote held at USLChampionship.com.

Murphy started his goal-filled July with a brace in a 2-2 draw with Atlanta United 2 on July 3. After a back-and-forth first 20 minutes, Kyle Murphy poked the ball away from the rushing Atlanta ‘keeper before taking a touch and calmly rolling the ball into an empty net to give the Memphis an early 1-0 lead in the 21’. Not long after, Murphy again found the ball at his feet as he collected an errant Leston Paul deflection and buried it into the net to extend Memphis’ lead to 2-0 in the 27’.  

A week later, Memphis and Murphy took down the division leader at the time in rival, Birmingham Legion FC. After a number of Memphis chances, Kyle Murphy continued his scoring streak by collecting a loose Laurent Kissiedou ball in the box, hammering one past Birmingham’s Van Oekel. 

Finally, in the final match of the month, and despite needing a bandage wrapped around his head after taking a knock early in the first half, Kyle Murphy continued his remarkable form by scoring his sixth goal of the season, this time in first-half stoppage time. Forward Michael Salazar set up the play with some nifty footwork at the edge of the box, as midfielder Raúl González picked up the ball and looped in a perfect cross that found the bandaged head of Kyle Murphy to put 901 FC ahead in the 45+4’.

"It feels great to be able to help out the team in getting results,” Murphy said. “We aren’t where we want to be in the playoff race, so there's still a lot more work to be done. However, it’s great to have a streak of positive results recently. We have a great group, and there's no reason why we can’t go far this season."

In his sixth season as a professional, Murphy is having his best year statistically. Averaging a goal every 95.7 minutes—the best mark of his career—Murphy also leads the league in goals minus penalty kicks per 90 minutes (0.84). Murphy’s nine goals not only tie the forward for third place in the league, but they also put him just two goals shy of the all-time record for goals in a season with the club and just four goals shy of the all-time record for career goals with 901 FC.

"Kyle is a consummate professional who keeps his head down and works hard, Head Coach Ben Pirmann said. “He has proven to be a top goalscorer in the USL Championship and he continues to perform for 901 FC.”

Already knocking in three goals this month, Murphy will face off against Birmingham Legion FC as Memphis welcome its rival to AutoZone Park on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT.

“Just getting a couple of good goals early in the season has allowed me to build my confidence early,” Murphy said. “My goals help everyone trust that I can do the job on the team, and it also gives me confidence knowing guys can rely on me.”

Murphy opened his account again Indy Eleven in Memphis’ stunning 1-2 victory over the then-division leaders on June 6. After playing just 93 minutes over the next three matches, Murphy exploded to record six goals in six matches and guided Memphis to a five-match unbeaten streak in the process.

I had a bit of a headache, and my head was pounding, but Raúl sent me a great ball in, I made some space in the box, and was able to get a head on it first.”

The following week, Murphy found the back of the net again in Kansas City, as midfielder Andre Reynolds tightroped a ball down the pitch to find Murphy near the halfway line. Murphy outpaced his SKC counterpart to send a ball past the ‘keeper at close range and give Memphis the lead early on.

One of the center backs squared off Kadeem so I couldn’t pass it to him, so I did a quick little toe poke so the keeper wasn’t settled, and I scored.”

Speaking to his skillset, Murphy is confident in his ability to use his size to win headers, maintain possession and score on the counter. The striker doesn’t mind people underestimating his speed as it can help in one-on-one situations such as his goal on Sunday.

“I’ll take my chance against any player in the league,” Murphy added. “I think my speed is underestimated, but using that, I was able to pull away from the defender on Sunday. I thought my composure in the final third was good, and I was able to get us our first one of the day.”

With Murphy and Michael Salazar combining to give Memphis the 1-2 win over Sporting Kansas City II last weekend, 901 FC travel to Oklahoma City where a win or a draw would give the club their longest unbeaten run in its history. However, while Memphis maintains its solid run of form, Murphy and the rest of the squad are focused on one match at a time.
