MEMPHIS, Tennessee – It’s been nearly four decades since pro soccer has been played in the Bluff City.
That all changes Saturday as Memphis 901 FC kicks off its inaugural season at AutoZone Park against the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Kickoff for this historic match is slated for 6:00 p.m. in downtown Memphis.
Saturday’s match marks a major milestone in Memphis pro sports as the club that was announced in January 2018 suits up for the first time.
At the helm of Memphis’ pro soccer team is head coach Tim Mulqueen, who is considered one of the premier goalkeeper gurus in the country. Mulqueen helped discover legendary goalkeeper Tim Howard in his early years in his native New Jersey.
Mulqueen was tapped as the head coach in 2018 after a successful career grooming talent in the collegiate and pro ranks.
Mulqueen, along with Sporting Director Andrew Bell, have spent months building a team mixed with American pro soccer veterans and rising stars along with some of the top talent from the Caribbean.
Wearing the captain’s armband Saturday and throughout the entire 2019 season will be 13-year MLS veteran and Memphis defender Marc Burch. Burch will be tasked to lead the upstart club from the back as Memphis vies for one of the eight playoff spots in the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference.
That campaign starts Saturday against Tampa Bay, who has a storied history and is one of the oldest pro soccer club in the United States. The Rowdies boast a playoff-caliber lineup in 2019 led by Kwadwo Poku and recent signee Antoine Hoppenot, one of the top assist leaders in the league in 2018.
Tampa Bay is led by former player Neill Collins who enters his second season leading the Rowdies.
The AutoZone Park plaza opens at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow with food and beverage options available along with a live DJ.
Single match tickets for Saturday’s match and all home matches in March and April are now on sale.
Season tickets, group tickets, and 7 Match Flex Plans are also available, with full season tickets starting at just $10 per match. Call (901) 721-6000 or go to https://www.memphis901fc.com/tickets for more information on all ticket options.
