MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC’s night ended in heartbreaking fashion as the Charleston Battery snagged a last-minute win over the hosts in the waning moments of Saturday’s fixture.
Charleston midfielder Dante Marini scored in the third and final minute of stoppage time as the Battery (4-1-2, 14 pts) took the 1-0 win.
Memphis’ night was one of several chances on goal with narrow misses. The club dominated the first half of play holding a 59-to-41 percent advantage when it came to possession.
Memphis’ best chance came in stoppage time right before halftime as forward Rashawn Dally just had his header saved after connecting on it. In front of a raucous crowd of 7,871 fans, club defended well against Charleston the entire way getting back on counter attacks and preventing any shots on target in the first 45 minutes.
The second half brought more chances for Memphis as the club had three shots on target, nearly converting all of them. One of them was in the 82nd minute when defender Todd Pratzner just hit the bottom of the crossbar off a corner kick.
Memphis (1-5-2, 5 pts) will now turn its sights to Louisville City FC as the club takes on the defending back-to-back league champions on Tuesday. That match will be the only road match before the club heads back home to AutoZone Park where the club will host Birmingham Legion FC.
