EAST HARTFORD, Connecticut – It was coming for Memphis 901 FC forward Elliot Collier, you could just feel it.
The forward had been putting in extra work on and off the pitch leading up to Friday night’s match.
And all that hard work paid off in heroic fashion in East Hartford as Collier hit home the match-winning goal in Memphis’ 2-1 win over Hartford Athletic FC (0-9-1, 1 pt).
The goal was Collier’s second of the season, the first since March 16 and helped Memphis (2-6-3, 9 pts) capture a crucial three points.
“I think Elliot has been playing really well lately,” 901 FC head coach Tim Mulqueen said after the win. “He played great on both ends of the ball tonight and I’m just really happy for him to get that one at the end.”
As with everything this year, Friday night’s result came the Memphis way; with hard work and perseverance.
After Memphis took an early 1-0 lead in the 24th minute off a Duane Muckette goal, Hartford knotted things up at 1-1 just six minutes later.
Both clubs entered halftime with the score level at 1-1.
“The halftime message was to keep believing,” Mulqueen said. “The message from the boys to themselves was to believe that we’re going to get this done.”
And they did.
Memphis cleaned up a few first half mistakes, dominated the second half possession and continued to build on its recent uptick in chances created.
Collier worked along the sideline for most of the night, but his goal would come dead in front of goal.
In the 70th minute, Memphis defender Wes Charpie put in a perfect cross into the box and despite his header being saved, Collier never gave up on the play tapping in the deflected shot with his left foot.
After going up 2-1, Memphis refused to relinquish the lead and held Hartford at bay until the final whistle blew.
With goals Friday night, Collier and Muckette joined Marc Burch in a three-way tie for most goals scored this season (2).
It was also Muckette’s second-straight match with a goal after scoring late against Birmingham Legion FC.
