MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC aims to write another chapter in its young history tonight as the club takes on Hartford Athletic in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Kickoff for this pivotal matchup is set for 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday’s meeting will decide who advances to face a squad from Major League Soccer (MLS) in the fourth round of the prestigious tournament. U.S. Soccer will hold its fourth round draw on Thursday to determine opponents/locations for the next round.
Both clubs met three weeks ago in Hartford as Memphis captured a 2-1 win on the road as a part of its current four-match unbeaten streak. Memphis has scored nine goals during that stretch, the most out of any stretch this season. Memphis scored three of those in its Open Cup debut on May 15 in a 3-1 triumph over New York Red Bulls U-23.
Defender Josh Morton scored the first brace (two goals in one match) in club history during that match.
Now Memphis will face a very different Hartford side that hasn’t lost since its match against 901 FC. Hartford has two wins and a draw since May 15, led offensively by former USL Championship MVP Jose Angulo (3 goals).
The head coaches of both squads Wednesday are very familiar with the Open Cup as both have won it all. Memphis head coach Tim Mulqueen won the Cup in 2004 as a member of the Kansas City Wizards’ (now Sporting Kansas City) coaching staff. Hartford head coach Jimmy Nielsen also won the Open Cup with Kansas City as the club’s goalkeeper and team captain in 2012.
Wednesday’s match offers not only a chance for soccer fans to watch American soccer’s preeminent competition, it will also allow them to donate to incredible causes.
Proceeds from the match benefit Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Neuroscience Institute through donations to River-City for Itty-Bitties (RIBS) and John Talley’s Pediatric Neurological Research Fund.
Both RIBS and John Talley’s fund have deep ties to the Memphis soccer community. RIBS’ annual adult soccer tournament and 5K benefit causes that are dear to the hearts of Greater Memphis Soccer Association supporters Jason and Jessica Vinson, who lost their infant daughter after a premature birth and whose nine-year old daughter, Kayden battles epilepsy and receives treatment at Le Bonheur.
John Talley was the General Manager of the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, which was started with the goal to provide better fields and better opportunities for children to play soccer in Shelby County. After his death from cancer in 2002, his son, Carey, started a fund at Le Bonheur that has helped raise over $140,000 since its inception.
