MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Led by Brandon Allen’s two goals and two assists from Cam Lindley, Memphis 901 FC picked up a 4-2 win over Swope Park Rangers Saturday night at AutoZone Park and has now won back-to-back games.
901 FC (6-13-7, 25 pts) trailed 1-0 before scoring twice in the next five minutes, and Memphis then got two goals from Allen within 10 minutes in the second half to seal the victory. Both of Memphis’ last two wins have come when the club conceded first. Memphis has nine recent multi-goal performances where the club is 7-0-2, after having two multi-goal performances in its first 10 matches of the season.
Allen now has five goals as a member of 901 FC, which is tied with Elliot Collier for the team lead. Lindley is up to four assists on the year, knotting Marcus Epps for most on the squad.
“Obviously it's good to get on the scoresheet, but to get back-to-back wins is big for us,” Allen said. “We just need to keep going. The next game is just as important, and we're still in the playoff push.”
Swope Park (3-16-6, 15 pts) scored first on a penalty kick in the 35th minute, but Pierre Da Silva answered quickly just three minutes later to tie things up at 1. Josh Morton then put home a beautiful corner kick from Lindley past the Swope Park keeper two minutes later, and Memphis found itself on top heading into the halftime locker room, 2-1.
After Swope Park scored its second goal in the 50th minute, Allen put 901 FC back on top off a beautiful ball from Lindley from midfield, and he then provided an insurance tally in the 77th minute playing a cross from Collier past the keeper.
The performance was Allen’s second two-goal outing of the year, after he also did so on July 20 against New York Red Bulls II.
“There was a little hump there for a while where I didn't feel we were as together as we were, but the past few games we've come together and realized we have a common goal of winning games for this franchise, for coach, for the owners and for everyone that has invested in this team, especially the fans,” Lindley said. “(Marc) Burch brought us together and said ‘hey, we got to give everything because Memphis deserves it,’ and I feel like we've been doing that and the results are coming.”
Memphis had 15 shots in the game, nine on target, and the club kept the pressure on with nine corner kicks.
“I think we have a really solid roster now,” head coach Tim Mulqueen said. “Where you can get contributions from Pierre (Da Silva), who is a wide player, jumps into center midfield for us because (Adam) Najem is away, and finishes a great chance, and runs the show with Cam (Lindley) and Dan (Metzger) in there. I think there's a lot of good players.
“The difference between earlier in the year and now is that we've been together now. The players are more comfortable with each other, they know each other and there's an identity to our team. You are seeing the fruits of that.”
901 FC next hits the road to face Loudoun United FC next Friday, Sept. 13, before returning to AutoZone Park for three-straight matches against Saint Louis FC (Sept. 21), Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (Sept. 24), and Bethlehem Steel FC (Sept. 28) to close the month of September.
