MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Two of the hottest teams in the USL Championship square off tomorrow night at AutoZone Park at 7:00, as Memphis 901 FC brings its three-match winning streak into a showdown with Saint Louis FC, winners of five-straight contests.
901 FC and Saint Louis FC are the only two teams in the Eastern Conference who have won each of their last three matches, and the pair is two of only five in the entire USL Championship with wins in its last three outings (Phoenix Rising FC, Sacramento Republic FC, Orange County SC). Memphis and Saint Louis played earlier this season in St. Louis and drew, 0-0. That match was a makeup of a June 1 postponement.
901 FC has come from behind to win each of its last three matches, winning at Loudoun United FC, 2-1, against Swope Park Rangers, 4-2, and at Atlanta United 2, 2-1. The three-match winning streak has vaulted Memphis from 17th place in the Eastern Conference before the Atlanta match on Aug. 28 to 13th place before this Saint Louis match.
In its most recent game last Friday night at Loudoun, 901 FC allowed a goal in the 5th minute, and the match remained 1-0 in favor of Loudoun until almost 20 minutes into the second half. 901 FC got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute thanks to an own-goal, with Ewan Grandison and Elliot Collier putting pressure on the Loudoun defense leading to the score.
Memphis took the lead in the 81st minute as Lagos Kunga, on as a substitute in the 68th minute, played a ball beautifully in front of the net to Brandon Allen, who put home his seventh goal of the season.
In Memphis' six recent matches in which it has scored a total of 13 goals, Allen has accounted for six of them.
After starting the season 0-11-2 when conceding first in a match, 901 FC has come back to win after allowing the first goal in each of its last three matches. The club was also 0-9-2 on the season when trailing at halftime before erasing halftime deficits to beat Atlanta United 2 and Loudoun United FC.
Earlier this week, 901 FC announced that Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC has acquired defender Todd Pratzner.
After tomorrow, 901 FC remains at AutoZone Park for two matches next week, hosting Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC Tuesday night at 7:00 in a make-up match and then Bethlehem Steel FC next Saturday night at 7:00.
