MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a successful preseason trial with the club, Memphis 901 FC announced the signing of 24-year-old and former Louisville Cardinal goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch to his first professional contract on Friday pending league and federation approval.
Gelnovatch lettered in goal at Albemarle High School in Charlottesville, Va. where he won a 5A state championship in 2016 with the Patriots. In addition to his time at Albemarle, Gelnovatch played at Richmond United Academy where he served as backup keeper in a match for former USL Championship side, Richmond Kickers. Gelnovatch also competed for the United States U16 national team in Azerbaijan at the 2013 Caspian Cup.
Playing collegiately for the Cardinals, Gelnovatch recorded 127 saves over his five year stay in Louisville. Gelnovatch accumulated 26 wins, maintained a 64.5% save percentage and 1.27 goals against average in 54 matches and nearly 5,000 minutes between the sticks. The goalkeeper was named to the 2018 ACC All-Tournament Team and was the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week in September 2019.
“We are pleased to be giving Jake his first pro contract,” Assistant Sporting Director James Roeling said. “All of us were impressed with his professionalism and ability during his trial period, and we are looking forward to continuing his development in a competitive environment this season.”
Gelnovatch will add depth to the goalkeeper position as he joins John Berner at AutoZone Park.
Additional news and information about the 2021 roster, schedule, tickets and more will be available in the coming weeks and months.
