Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC (4-4-4) will look to retain its recent form as the club will travel to Kansas City to face Sporting Kansas City II (3-8-5) Sunday afternoon. Riding a four-match unbeaten streak, Memphis is coming off a 1-0 win over first-time opponent FC Tulsa at AutoZone Park on Saturday.
Despite needing a bandage wrapped around his head after taking a knock early in the first half, Kyle Murphy continued his remarkable form by scoring the match-winner and his sixth goal of the season, this time in first-half stoppage time. Forward Michael Salazar set up the play with some nifty footwork at the edge of the box, as midfielder Raúl González picked up the ball and looped in a perfect cross that found the bandaged head of Kyle Murphy to put 901 FC ahead in the 45+4’.
Memphis 901 FC has surged up the Central Division standings as it finds itself at sixth overall and three points shy of the playoff line with eight points in its last four matches. On the other hand, Sporting Kansas City II sits at last place in the conference with 14 points as it comes off a midweek loss to Louisville City at home. While SKC II has an eye for the back of the net, the team also has a difficult time in defense as Kansas City has conceded the fourth-most goals in the league this season.
Individually, SKC II’s Enoch Mushagalusa leads the club and is tied for 15th in the league with five scores on the year. The forward is also tied for fourth in the league in shots with 35. For Memphis, Kyle Murphy continues to make his way toward the golden boot conversation as the forward is tied for 11th in the league with his team-leading six goals. Between the posts, newcomer Kyle Morton has already recorded two clean sheets in three appearances.
Memphis last faced Sporting Kansas City II on June 26 at AutoZone Park. After seeing Sporting II jump out to a two-goal lead in the 55’, Memphis mounted a two-goal response to tie up the match in a comeback bid that fell just short after an SKC II goal with 18 minutes left in the match. Before the 2021 campaign, Memphis tallied a draw and a win against Sporting II during the 2019 season.
Sunday’s match in Kansas City is set to kick off at 4 p.m. CT and can be seen on CW30 Memphis and ESPN+.
