Oklahoma City, Okla. – Memphis 901 FC (5-5-4, 19 points) dropped a tough contest on the road to OKC Energy FC (5-6-6, 21 points) on Saturday night. After a Laurent Kissiedou ejection in the 24’, the Energy capitalized on its personnel advantage to secure a home victory.
Following an even first 20 minutes, things turned sour for Memphis in the 24’ as Kissiedou made an erroneous tackle on OKC’s Brown which resulted in a straight red card. After a strong goal from the Energy’s Daniels in the 40’, the home side would record another from Daniels in the 45’.
Memphis 901 FC would not yield, though, as the visitors came out of the halftime break on the front foot. It did not take long for Memphis to find the opener, as Kadeem Dacres raced down the field and sent a low cross into the box for Murphy. Murphy opened his hips to send the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal and reduce OKC’s lead to one as the forward slotted home his seventh goal in his last seven matches.
Memphis would follow Murphy’s goal with a number of close chances as it searched for the equalizer, but it would be the Energy who found a pair of scores in the final 20 minutes of action at Taft Stadium to cement its 4-1 victory.
Kyle Murphy’s solid run during the middle of the 2021 campaign continued with his goal on Saturday and placed the forward in a tie for fourth in the league with his team-leading eight goals. Murphy also led the team in shots and shots on target during his 90 minutes on the pitch. While the defense was stretched out due to the numerical disadvantage, defenders Zach Carroll, Niall Logue and Mark Segbers won every aerial duel they were involved in. Finally, despite his concessions, goalkeeper Kyle Morton’s six saves gives the ‘keeper 24 in just five matches with Memphis.
“Disappointing result,” Head Coach Ben Pirmann said of the loss. “We had a really good response in the second half to make it 2-1, and we had some good action around goal. The lack of discipline early on hurt us, but sometimes that can happen in football. We have to refocus and get settled in for Tuesday night.”
Memphis’ quick turnaround will feature a Tuesday night matchup with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at AutoZone Park. The match will be broadcast nationally on ESPN Deportes and on SiriusXM FC. The match can also be seen on CW30 Memphis and ESPN+. Kickoff in Memphis is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
