Kansas City, Kan. – Memphis 901 FC (5-6-7) played Sporting Kansas City II (3-12-7) to a nil-nil draw Sunday evening at Children’s Mercy Park. The match saw three debutants for Memphis make an impact on the pitch.
The afternoon started with strong possessions for Memphis as the visitors stretched the field and earned a dangerous free kick early on. Following the opening rush from 901 FC, Sporting Kansas City II took control of the ball and the possession advantage throughout the remainder of the match.
Despite Kansas City’s control of possession, Memphis continually challenged the home side with swift counter attacks and patient passing when in possession. The match ended in a scoreless draw as Memphis could only send three shots on target to Kansas City’s zero.
Sunday’s action saw the debuts of recently signed goalkeeper and winger, Cody Cropper and Alan Winn, respectively, as well as forward Roland Lamah’s first minutes of the season. Cropper participated in all 90 minutes of the match despite not being needed to make a save. Winn and Lamah came on as substitutes in the second half, playing 45 and nine minutes, respectively. Winn was responsible for a key pass and Lamah maintained 100% passing accuracy.
“From an attitude and effort standpoint, it was an A+, and we gave it everything we possibly could,” Head Coach Ben Pirmann said after the match. “With the travel, short turnaround, injuries and everything else we had to deal with, the boys put it all on the line and that’s all we can ask for. Overall, today was a positive, and we have ten home matches left, and we need to be picking up max points at home.”
With the draw, Memphis remain in seventh place in the Central Division and a trio of points shy of the playoff line. 901 FC still have a number of games in hand in comparison to its divisional counterparts and will catch up with two matches over the next six days.
Memphis will have another three-match homestand over the next two weeks, as 901 FC will host OKC Energy FC on Wednesday for 901 Day before welcoming in Birmingham Legion FC and the Miami FC. Wednesday’s match against OKC will kick off from AutoZone Park at 7 p.m. CT.
