MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC (6-8-7, 25 points, Central) will travel to Montclair, N.J. to take on New York Red Bulls II (4-15-4, 16 points, Atlantic) at MSU Soccer Park at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Memphis are coming off a 0-2 home defeat to the Miami FC a week ago, while New York Red Bulls II dropped a midweek contest to San Antonio FC on Wednesday.
Last week, Memphis were able to send several shots on target in the first half, but it was the Miami FC that found the opener in the 32’. François would go on to score his second of the evening in the 50’, slotting one through a pair of Memphis defenders. Memphis increased the pressure for the remainder of the match, but Sparrow and the Miami defense proved to be impenetrable.
Coming into existence in 2015, New York Red Bulls II started with five straight trips to the playoffs and a 2016 USL title, but a disappointing 2020 has spilled into 2021, as New York has struggled this season and accounted for just four wins in 23 tries. Conceding the second-most goals in the league with 53, New York has allowed 25 more goals than Memphis on just eight additional shots faced. Additionally, the Red Bulls have had their fair share of discipline issues as the club has accumulated the most yellow cards in the league with 67 and the fourth-most fouls with 340.
New York have several standout players and 10 unique goalscorers spread across the offense this season. New York also have a pair of goalkeepers that have 26 saves apiece—both tied for 31st in the league. For Memphis, 901 FC will aim to get back to scoring as forward Kyle Murphy is tied for eighth in the league in goals with his club-leading 11.
The series history between both young clubs has featured plenty of goals. The two sides haven’t met since Memphis’ inaugural campaign in 2019 and the Red Bulls hold a 1-0-1 advantage. The first matchup was a back-and-forth affair that resulted in a 3-2 New York victory at MSU Soccer Park in March 2019. The latest meeting between Memphis and New York came at AutoZone Park in July 2019 in a match that featured a two-goal New York halftime advantage erased in the second 45 minutes with a Brandon Allen brace.
An early match for Memphis 901 FC will kick off from MSU Soccer Park in Montclair, N.J. at noon Sunday, Sept. 19. The match can be seen on CW 30 Memphis and ESPN+.
