MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC (8-8-8, 32 points) jumped into a playoff position following a 1-1 draw with division leader Louisville City FC (14-5-6, 48 points) on Saturday night. A quick start from both parties saw each of their leading scorers knock in goals within the first ten minutes of the match before the defenses took over.
The match started with heavy Memphis pressure in the Louisville half. Just over a minute into the match, Louisville turned the ball over, and Kyle Murphy slotted a ball past Hubbard and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to put Memphis ahead after two minutes and ten seconds. Murphy’s goal is the second-fastest goal scored in club history, clocking in just one second slower than Michael Salazar’s record-breaker in Indianapolis on June 5.
The scoring continued soon thereafter—this time for Louisville—as Cameron Lancaster headed in a looping ball from beyond the edge of the box to level the contest at one goal apiece. Following Louisville’s score in the 7’, neither side would find the back of the net again, as Cody Cropper and the Memphis defense stood tall.
Kyle Murphy’s 15th score of the season positions the forward in sole possession of third place in the league as he continues to extend the club record for goals in a season and goals in a career with the club. Kadeem Dacres’ assist on Murphy’s goal gives the midfielder five assists on the year—the second-most in a single season in 901 FC history. Goalkeeper Cody Cropper recorded a season-high five saves as he moves into fifth place in Memphis 901 FC history with his 17 saves in a single season.
“To come out of three matches in six and a half days with seven points is good,” Head Coach Ben Pirmann said. “Nobody ever likes tying, but they’re [Louisville City FC] the top team in our division. It’s a solid result, a solid outcome. We gave them a really goofy goal, but the chances in the first 60 minutes were ours.”
“They’re top for a reason,” defender Niall Logue said of Louisville. “They’re a quality side with quality players. However, I felt we tested them tonight and that we had our chances. Overall, I think you could argue that a draw was a fair result. We’re happy with a point.”
Saturday evening’s draw with Louisville—the first time 901 FC has earned points against Louisville in four previous matchups—propelled Memphis to fourth place in the Central Division standings and into a playoff position with a game in hand. The draw also denied Louisville the chance to clinch a playoff spot. Next, Memphis will travel to Tulsa for the final time this season to face FC Tulsa on Saturday, Oct. 2.
