MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC earned a big win by defeating Indy Eleven 2-1 at AutoZone Park Saturday night. Memphis has now won four of its last five matches and ended Indy’s four-match winning streak.
Memphis and Indy got off to a quick start, with each registering shots within the first five minutes of the match. Memphis took an early advantage in corner kicks, taking five to Indy’s zero.
The ball continued to move for 901 FC and hit the back of the net. Zach Carroll volleyed a headed cross from Patrick Seagrist and took a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner to put Memphis on the board in the 34th minute. 901 FC is 5-0-1 when scoring first this season.
901 FC built into the box steadily, taking their chances, leading with seven shots (three on target) in the first half to Indy’s four shots (one on target). Memphis established a good rhythm with 86.7% passing accuracy, making the most out of its possession.
Memphis kept the pressure up as Indy looked to equalize the match. Indy Eleven received their first corner of the night in the 58th minute and 901 FC was able to counter as Jeremy Kelly chipped the ball over the Indy defense to the feet of Laurent Kissiedou. The latter took a quick touch and shot the ball past Elliot Panicco to the back of the net from outside the box putting Memphis up 2-0.
Indy Eleven cut the lead down by one as Jonas Fjeldberg took a shot that deflected and bounced across the goal line out of Trey Muse’s hands in the 66th minute.
Memphis held strong over the final 20 minutes, putting together a professional performance to secure the three points.
Tonight’s win puts 901 FC in 4th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference. Memphis has won four of its last five matches and earned at least a point in five of its last six USL Championship matches.
Memphis is at AutoZone Park on Wednesday, May 18 to play host to LA Galaxy II at 7:00 p.m. CDT kickoff.
