Memphis, Tenn – Memphis 901 FC Head Coach Ben Pirmann was named the USL Championship Coach of the Year for the 2022 season, the league announced on Wednesday.
Memphis 901 FC achieved the highest finish in club history this season, earning the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with 68 points and 21 victories before the club’s first postseason victory in the first round of the 2022 USL Championship Playoffs. The club set new records for wins, points and goals scored in the banner year.
“We are delighted that Ben has been named USL Championship Coach of the Year,” Assistant Sporting Director Caleb Patterson-Sewell said. “Ben and his staff have put in a tremendous amount of work and this caps off a fantastic season for our club, players and now staff.”
Pirmann appointed as interim Head Coach late in the 2020 regular season and was named the permanent Head Coach ahead of the 2021 season after serving as an assistant coach since 2018. In his two years as head coach, 901 FC boasts a 36-18-13 record and two postseason appearances.
“It’s very humbling to earn this award, especially with so many top coaches in the league. This is a team award, and I am so grateful for these players to perform the way they did day in and day out,” Pirmann said. “I appreciate the honor but it’s always down to the team and what we’ve been able to accomplish as a unit.”
Pirmann received 46% of the vote to earn the award, while San Antonio FC’s Alen Marcina finished second on 25% and Detroit City FC’s Trevor James took third on 14%. Eight coaches overall received votes in balloting.
The USL Championship Awards were voted on by club technical staffs, executives and a league-wide media panel that included representation from every USL Championship market. Voting was conducted following the conclusion of the 2022 Championship regular season.
