Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC announced on Monday the club has signed former USMNT and MLS goalkeeper Bill Hamid for the 2023 season. The signing is pending league and federation approval along with a medical exam.
With the signing, Hamid becomes the one of the most decorated players ever to sign to a USL Championship roster. The keeper brings his D.C United and international experience to Memphis as one of the only USMNT alumni to join USL Championship team since 901 FC Sporting Director Tim Howard played with the club in its inaugural season in 2019.
“The signing of Bill Hamid will potentially be the greatest signing in club history and certainly one of the biggest in USL,” Howard said. “He comes to 901 FC as he enters the prime of his career. Bill has a winning pedigree, having lifted trophies domestically and internationally. Most importantly, we believe that his time spent as a member of the USMNT will prove pivotal to our locker room and on-field success.”
The 32-year-old goalkeeper tallied over 200 starts with D.C. United in his 13-year pro career which includes 88 clean sheets, a U.S. Open Cup medal and MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2014. Hamid made his MLS debut in 2010 at 19, beating Tim Howard’s record as the youngest goalkeeper to win an MLS game by four days.
The Annandale, Virginia, native started training with USMNT senior team in 2009 before representing the country in international competition from 2012 to 2020, boasting two CONCACAF Gold Cup victories in 2013 and 2017.
“In Memphis there is an ambitious club, in a great market, with a solid team and staff,” Hamid said. “After working with Tim Howard in many U.S. Men’s national team camps and being his teammate as we won the 2017 Gold Cup, I believe he and ownership have a great project here. I cherish the chance to come to Memphis and earn the right to play on a team who did really well last season.”
Pending the physical, Hamid will be immediately eligible for competition and available for selection in Saturday’s match against Oakland Roots SC. The matchup at Laney Football Stadium is set for 9 p.m. CT. Fans can watch on ESPN+ nationally and WMC 5.2 locally.
