Edinburg, Texas – Memphis 901 FC grabbed a convincing 3-0 victory over the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at H-E-B Park on Saturday night. Goals from Bruno Lapa, Graham Smith and Nighte Pickering helped 901 FC topple the Toros and earn their first win of the season.
Memphis dominated the first half with 62% of the possession and 36 final third entries leading to four shots on goal in the half. The constant pressure paid off as Akeem Ward put Lapa through in the box with the midfielder finishing past the keeper for his second goal of the season in the 29th minute.
Memphis remained on the front foot in the second half and found the back of the net when a shot from Carson Vom Steeg bounced off of the crossbar, only for Smith to fly through with a header to double the lead in the 64th minute. The 2022 All-League Second Team defender notched his first goal of the season.
Pickering sealed the match with his first touch of the night as Luiz Fernando served up a ball in the box to give the young striker his first score of the season in the 87th minute.
Memphis 901 FC moved to 1-2-2 on the season with the victory. Memphis is unbeaten in their last 29 matches after leading at halftime dating back to the 2020 season.
