Pittsburgh, Penn. – Memphis 901 FC fell to top Eastern Conference foe Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC 4-2 on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium in just their second road loss of the season.
Memphis grabbed a first half lead with two goals from Luiz Fernando and Rodrigo da Costa while Aaron Molloy assisted both scores to put his season tally at five, but the Beale Street Boys couldn’t hold on to defeat the top team in the conference.
Luiz Fernando opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a left-footed shot from just inside the box. Aaron Molloy gathered control and fed Fernando, who took two touches to give Memphis the lead. Fernando scored his fifth goal of the USL regular season.
Rodrigo da Costa doubled the lead in the 35th minute, leaping over the Pittsburgh defense to finish a header from a ball from and Molloy corner kick. The score was Da Costa’s team-leading eighth goal of the season with the forward contributing to three goals in the last three matches.
Pittsburgh would go on to score four unanswered goals as 901 FC dropped to 8-6-6 on the season at No. 5 in the Eastern Conference standings after the loss.
901 FC continues their run of six away matches in seven games as the road trip moves to Loudoun United on Wednesday, August 2. The midweek matinee match is set to kickoff at 10 a.m. CT.
