MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC has acquired defender Abdi Mohamed on loan from New York City FC hours ahead of Saturday’s inaugural season opener, the club announced Saturday.
Pending league and federation approval, Mohamed joins forward Elliot Collier, goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, midfielder Damani Holness, forward Rashawn Dally, forward Junior Sandoval, defender Louis Bennett, defender Marc Burch, defender Wes Charpie, forward Heviel Cordovés, midfielder Raul Gonzalez, midfielder Ewan Grandison, defender Morgan Hackworth, defender Triston Hodge, goalkeeper Scott Levene, midfielder Dan Metzger, defender Josh Morton, midfielder Duane Muckette, midfielder Adam Najem, midfielder Leston Paul, defender Todd Pratzner, and forward Luca Uccello on the team’s 2019 roster.
Mohamed is a former second round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Akron.
“We’re excited to bring a young, talented defender like Abdi Mohamed to Memphis,” 901 FC Sporting Director Andrew Bell said. “He has a lot of upside and we look forward to him contributing this season.”
Mohamed was a college standout at both Ohio State, where he played at from 2015-17, and at Akron where his offensive and defensive attributes were on full display.
Throughout his college career, Mohamed made 77 starts for the Buckeyes and Zips combined scoring 12 goals and notching 16 assists. He was named Big 10 Conference Newcomer of the Year and made the Big 10 Conference All-Freshman Team in 2015 to go along with several collegiate accolades.
Mohamed was also a standout high school player earning all-state honors at Westerville Central High School and playing club soccer at Classic Eagles.
