Memphis, Tenn. – After picking up its first win of the season over Indy Eleven last Saturday, Memphis 901 FC will wrap up a five-match road trip to start the 2021 season in Louisville on Saturday, June 12. The club is coming off an impressive 2-1 victory over the then-league leaders in Indianapolis as it prepares to face Louisville City FC at a full-capacity Lynn Family Stadium.

In Memphis’ first victory of the season, the visitors stunned the home side with a Michael Salazar goal in the 3’ which stands as the quickest score in club history. Newly minted USL Championship Team of the Week member, Laurent Kissiedou, sent a perfect ball down the middle of the pitch to the feet of Salazar for the go-ahead goal. The second goal came in the 35’ minute courtesy of Kyle Murphy finishing off a loose ball in the box. Despite conceding a late goal in stoppage time, Memphis 901 FC’s two first-half goals were enough to propel the club to the victory.

Making the win even sweeter, Memphis ventured to Indianapolis down six men due to injuries, suspension and international play all while toting a number of young academy players on the bench. Two of those academy players in Matt Brucker and Tycho Collins also saw the pitch, making history for Memphis. Despite the odds, Memphis 901 FC not only claimed its first victory of the season but also the first victory over its new divisional rival.

With many of the players previously unavailable now presented for selection, Memphis 901 FC travels to Louisville City FC’s Lynn Family Stadium for its Grand Opening match.  While it’s not the first match at the ground, it is the first time the stadium will be at 100% capacity.

Louisville City comes into the match riding a two-match losing streak as the club finds itself sitting at fifth in the Central Division and just two spots above Memphis. After starting the season strong with a 2-0 win against Atlanta United 2, LouCity found trouble over the next four matches, drawing with Birmingham Legion FC and defeating a struggling San Diego Loyal SC before losing back-to-back matches to Indy Eleven and Atlanta United 2. Over their first five matches, Louisville has averaged just 1.2 goals per match.

Louisville is led by veteran captain Paolo DelPiccolo who leads the club in goals with two. Cameron Lancaster also adds to the LouCity attack as the former Tottenham Hotspur and Dagenham & Redbridge product leads the team in shots and has a goal on the year. Defensively, Louisville City will be without Oscar Jimenez but returns 17-year-old Jonathan Gomez who was away with the Mexican national team for Concacaf Nations League action.

Memphis 901 FC has never defeated Louisville City in their three previous meetings. After dropping back-to-back 2-1 losses to Louisville in 2019, the only meeting of the shortened 2020 campaign went the way of Louisville, 4-1, as the aforementioned Lancaster had a brace at a reduced-capacity Lynn Family Stadium.

This is the first of four matchups between divisional opponents Memphis 901 FC and Louisville City FC during the 2021 season. Next up, Memphis will welcome the club to AutoZone Park on September 29 and October 13 before returning to Louisville ten days later on October 23. The match will take place on Saturday, June 5 at IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium at 6:00 p.m. CT and be televised on CW30 Memphis and ESPN+.

In a chippy game that saw six yellow cards distributed and no goals scored between the two sides, Memphis was forced to settle for a point on the road in their first-ever meeting with the Energy. Goalkeeper John Berner had another big day between the sticks as the veteran keeper made four saves on his way to the first clean sheet of the season. Berner now sits at third in the league with 17 saves and holds a commanding 85% save success rate.

Despite the lack of goals, Memphis had chances as Laurent Kissiedou’s form continues to improve as he led the team in shots, shots on target and key passes. With a number of cautions issued by referee Matthew Corrigan, Kadeem Dacres picked up a duo of yellow cards in the 72’ and 89’ leading to a suspension for the upcoming match against Indy Eleven.

Memphis 901 FC has a thinned roster heading into Indianapolis as at least three players are unavailable for selection due to various reasons. Kadeem Dacres is serving his one-match suspension due to a red card picked up in the OKC match while Dre Fortune and Raúl González will miss one match at a minimum on international duty as their respective countries attempt to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar.

On the other side of the pitch, Indy Eleven have started the season hot accumulating three wins and a draw in five contests thus far. Averaging over a goal a match as a team, Indy’s leading scorer, forward Jordan Hamilton, is tied for seventh in the league with three goals and was recently named to the USL Championship Team of the Week. Additionally, midfielder Gordon Wild has started the season strong as the German leads the Eastern Conference in assists with three.

Indy Eleven has controlled the three previous meetings between the two clubs as the series started off with back-to-back 3-0 victories for Indy in 2019 before Memphis succumbed to a 4-2 defeat last season. The next matchup between the two sides is scheduled for July 17 in Indianapolis before the sides return to Memphis to face off on September 22. Finally, the two will meet again in Memphis on October 30 to conclude the 2021 campaign.

The match at Fifth Third Bank Stadium will be televised on CW30 Memphis and ESPN+.

Last time out, John Berner earned Buff City Soap Man of the Match honors after an outing that saw the keeper make nine critical saves. Despite allowing one goal, Berner and the defensive backline performed well with Zach Carroll and Skylar Thomas leading the way with ten clearances and ten interceptions between the pair.

On the other side of the ball, the young attacking unit had their share of chances as chemistry improved throughout the duration of the match. Dre Fortune proved to be a key factor in chance creation as the midfielder was tied for the most shots and shots on target, with four and one, respectively, and led the squad with four key passes.
