MLS Veteran Caleb Sewell Named Assistant Sporting Director
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC announced its technical staff for the 2022 season on Wednesday.
Caleb Sewell, former goalkeeper for New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, has been named Assistant Sporting Director. While playing in MLS, Sewell went to two MLS Cup Finals. He also spent six years playing professional soccer in the Portugal’s Premier League. Sewell most recently served as a player/coach for Toronto FC II during the 2021 season.
“We are very excited to welcome Caleb Sewell to the Memphis 901 FC family,” Sporting Director Tim Howard said. “Caleb’s soccer experience both at home and abroad will be invaluable as we identify, sign and develop talent for our club.”
A native of Nashville, Sewell is also the founder of CPS Soccer Academy, a training academy for kids looking to improve their skills while being mentored by current and former professional players in his home city.
“I want to thank Peter, Craig and Tim for their trust and bringing me on board for this exciting project,” Sewell said. “Memphis 901 FC is coming off their best season to date under Ben and Devin, I am looking forward to working with them on and off the field in this role as we build a winning team. Being from Tennessee this is quite a special job for me, and I look forward to helping the club return to the playoffs this season.”
Ben Pirmann will return for his second full season as head coach after leading the team to its first ever playoff berth in 2021. Pirmann took over as interim head coach for the final three matches of 2020 and led the team to a pair of victories. After being named to the position on a permanent basis for the 2021 campaign, Pirmann led 901 FC to a third- place finish in the Central Division. Prior to his arrival in Memphis as assistant coach for the 2019 season, the Michigan native had coaching stops at Michigan State, his alma mater, and Detroit City FC.
In addition, Memphis 901 FC also announced a multi-year partnership with Accel Performance and Wellness Center in Germantown. Players will have individual and team training plans implemented by Accel under the supervision of top strength and conditioning coaches.
“We are thrilled to be the official performance and wellness provider for Memphis 901 FC,” said Drew Graham, manager at Accel. “Our team is ready to help these athletes reach their performance goals and have a successful season.”
Players will also use state-of-the-art equipment that will provide data-driven feedback for the players and staff. For recovery, players will have access to professional-level equipment such as in-ground ice and hot tubs, Game Ready machines, Normatecs, massage chairs, massage therapists and more.
