MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Two national anthems will play on opposite corners of the world Wednesday.
And while both will take place during two very different international friendlies, they both will share one thing in common; Memphis 901 FC.
Four 901 FC players will represent their countries in friendlies Wednesday in yet another historic mark for the new club.
Defender Triston Hodge, midfielder Leston Paul and forward Duane Muckette will represent Trinidad & Tobago while Memphis teammate and midfielder Adam Najem will suit-up for Afghanistan.
Wednesday will be the first time that 901 FC has been represented on an international level.
For players like Leston Paul, these call-ups send a clear message to soccer fans in the Bluff City.
“It shows that we have a good thing going,” Paul said. “We have a big future ahead.
“To have guys representing their national teams will only benefit Memphis. Hopefully we can bring back that experience and have a better season throughout the year.
All four players have had more than two-dozen call-ups combined, but each cap feels as special as the first.
“Playing for your national team, for any country, is a great honor,” Najem said. “Not many players during their career can say they’ve had an opportunity to represent their country.
“It’s another stage in my career that I take very seriously and I’m always happy to get that opportunity.”
Najem will get that opportunity twice this week as the Afghan national team plays in a four-team tournament in Malaysia.
“This is not only big for me, but also big for the team as a whole as we get closer to Asia and World Cup qualifying,” Najem said. “It’s important for us to get as many games as we can and build that chemistry on and off the field.
“Representing your country in one game is more than enough. But the opportunity to play two games in a country such as Malaysia is an awesome experience.”
All four players departed for their respective destinations Sunday.
The Wales v. Trinidad & Tobago match will be available for viewing at 2:45 p.m. CT on Sky Sports Football and available for stream on NowTV.
Memphis will return home Wednesday, April 10 to face Atlanta United 2 at 7:00 p.m.
Single match tickets for that match and all home matches in April are now on sale.
Season tickets, group tickets, and 7 Match Flex Plans are also available, with full season tickets starting at just $10 per match. Call (901) 721-6000 or go to https://www.memphis901fc.com/tickets for more information on all ticket options.
