“The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the national championship of U.S. Soccer, so we’re very proud to represent Memphis in it,” 901 FC Sporting Director Andrew Bell said. “We take all competition very seriously, including the Open Cup, and we look forward to doing whatever we can to advance as far as we can.”
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is one of the preeminent competitions in North American soccer dating back more than 100 years. All U.S. Soccer affiliated teams are allowed to participate in the annual tournament.
This year's winning team will receive $300,000, a berth in the 2020 Concacaf Champions League and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize.
Three USL Championship squads made the Round of 16 last year with Louisville City FC making it all the way to the quarterfinals. The Houston Dynamo (MLS) won the Cup with a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Union in the final.
