Memphis will host Hartford Athletic at 7:00 p.m. in a crucial showdown that’ll determine a meeting with an MLS opponent.
Memphis is riding a four-match unbeaten streak headed into Wednesday’s match against Hartford, a team it beat three weeks ago as part of the streak. Hartford hasn't lost a match since that meeting.

A draw to determine who MLS squads will take place on Thursday, May 30 and the fourth round will be played June 11-12. No non-MLS club has won the Open Cup since 1999, so Memphis and Hartford are both vying to write historic chapters in their inaugural seasons.

Both Memphis head coach Tim Mulqueen and Hartford Athletic head coach Jimmy Nielsen know this competition very well. After all, both have won the whole thing while in Kansas City. Mulqueen was the goalkeeper coach for the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City) when they won it in 2004. Nielsen won it as Sporting Kansas City’s starting goalkeeper and team captain in 2012.

Proceeds from the match benefit Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Neuroscience Institute through donations to River-City for Itty-Bitties (RIBS) and John Talley’s Pediatric Neurological Research Fund.
Both RIBS and John Talley’s fund have deep ties to the Memphis soccer community. RIBS’ annual adult soccer tournament and 5K benefit causes that are dear to the hearts of Greater Memphis Soccer Association supporters Jason and Jessica Vinson, who lost their infant daughter after a premature birth and whose nine-year old daughter, Kayden battles epilepsy and receives treatment at Le Bonheur.
John Talley was the General Manager of the Mike Rose Soccer Complex, which was started with the goal to provide better fields and better opportunities for children to play soccer in Shelby County. After his death from cancer in 2002, his son, Carey, started a fund at Le Bonheur that has helped raise over $140,000 since its inception.

The complex has hosted professional soccer players before as Carey Talley, a veteran MLS defender, has hosted charity matches that's raised money and awareness for brain cancer research. In 2001, Talley hosted the first match bringing 22 MLS players, including current 901 FC minority owner and legendary goalkeeper Tim Howard, to Memphis. Wednesday will offer another unique opportunity for the venue and the greater Memphis metro area.
