MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC’s run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup came to a close Wednesday night as a powerful Orlando City SC lineup edged the hosts 3-1.
Memphis ended its run in the Open Cup as the only team from Tennessee left in the prestigious tournament.
Wednesday night saw a sold-out crowd of 3,088 fans pack the stands at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Orlando struck first in the match as All-Star midfielder Sacha Kljestan converted a penalty kick in the 38th minute of play.
Orlando would enter the break up 1-0, but Memphis wasn’t finished.
Five minutes into the second half, forward Elliot Collier headed in an Adam Najem corner kick to tie the match up at 1-1. That goal kicked off a frantic five minutes as both squads picked up the pace of play.
Orlando found an opening after taking over possession at midfield as Kljestan capped-off his brace (two goals) to put the club up 2-1. Defender Robin Jansson would score the final goal for the visitors to close the match out at 3-1.
Memphis now hits the road to take on the Ottawa Fury on Saturday in Canada. Kickoff for that match is set for 6:00 p.m.
The club returns home to the Bluff City on Saturday, June 22 when it hosts Liga MX powerhouse C.F. Pachuca.
