KENNESAW, Georgia –Adam Najem scored the equalizer in the 79th minute and then the game-winner in the 83rd minute to help Memphis 901 FC pick up a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Atlanta United 2 Wednesday night in Kennesaw, Ga.
Najem first took a beautiful pass from Josh Morton in the middle of the box and used a couple of dribbles before depositing Memphis’ opening goal of the night, and just four minutes later he knocked home a rebound off the Atlanta keeper to put 901 FC ahead for good.
The two-goal performance was the first by a Memphis (5-13-7, 22 pts) player since Brandon Allen against New York Red Bulls II on July 20. The victory snapped 901 FC’s three-match losing streak, and Memphis jumped two teams in the USL Championship Eastern Conference standings with the triumph.
Memphis now has eight multi-goal performances in its last 19 matches and is 6-0-2 when doing so. 901 FC had only two multi-goal performances in its first 10 matches of the season and did not win either match.
Atlanta (5-15-5, 20 pts) scored first in the 37th minute on a penalty kick, but after that the 901 FC defense buckled down and limited Atlanta’s chances down the stretch. Atlanta had 10 shots in the match but only two on-target, while seven of Memphis’ 15 shots were on-frame.
901 FC had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Elliot Collier came on as a sub in the 60th minute, marking his first appearance since July 20 after an injury.
901 FC stays on the road for a Monday night match at Charleston Battery at 5:00 (CT) to make up a game postponed earlier this season. Memphis' next match in Downtown Memphis is Saturday, Sept. 7 against Swope Park Rangers.
