Memphis, Tenn. (May 7, 2024) – The USL Championship announced Tuesday that Memphis 901 FC forward Marlon was voted the league’s Player of the Week for Regular Season Week 9.
Marlon followed up his two-assist outing last week in Birmingham with an electric performance to power the Beale Street Boys past Tampa Bay with two goals and an assist in just 50 minutes of action.
“He’s dangerous, he’s quick, he works hard and he’s everything we thought he would give us when we put him up there,” said Memphis Head Coach Stephen Glass. “I think being a focal point on the team suits him well.”
The Brazilian forward opened the scoring against the Rowdies with an outstanding finish from outside the penalty area for his first goal of the season and then four minutes later added an assist in setting up Luiz Fernando for a close-range finish. Marlon added a third goal five minutes into the second half as his speed consistently challenged the Tampa Bay back line.
Marlon earned 42 percent of the ballot to claim the award. The Championship’s Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship.
Memphis 901 FC will take on MLS club FC Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 on Tuesday, May 7 at Toyota Stadium. Kickoff for the matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
